Self Assessment
In this writing for sciences class, I was able to gain knowledge through the information we had to find for our assignments. I didn’t expect to be able to keep up with all the work we did in class knowing myself. Surprisingly the assignments became very intriguing and fun to complete as I was learning while collecting evidence. Through the course I found myself struggling to complete the scientific rhetorical analysis paper, due to the fact that it was hard for me to identify the authors purpose for writing the article. I had to read the article multiple times and ask for assistance from my peers before I was able to comprehend the authors purpose.
Through the course we were also able to write a formal letter of introduction. We started with an informal introduction which is basically how I would introduce myself to everyone on a daily basis. But I soon learned the proper way to introduce myself with this assignment. It showed me what words to use when speaking to specific people so I could target who I was intending to.
Soon after we had to complete the science section article summaries. I decided to do research on whales and jellyfish because I have recently become very intrigued with life under water. I want to learn as much as I can on aquatic animals. Learning on how slow whales hearts are was amazing, I always believed that whales hearts had to work twice as hard because of its massive heart but turns out I was incorrect. Now on the jellyfish, once I saw the name upside down jellyfish I had to use it. It’s amazing to see how different these animals are from each other but live in the same habitat.
The assignment I was able to complete with great confidence was the scientific controversy paper. This is because I had the choice of speaking on a subject i felt strongly on which was abortion. This paper allowed me to express myself freely while it also taught me more about a subject I already had an opinion on. With the help of Gale database and youtube I was able to complete most of my assignments.
For my virtual studies I went with the ocean floor again going back to my recent love with the ocean and its animals. There is so much and so many different species of animals to discover. On my second study I decided to speak on obesity and how its becoming the new normal now and how we can change that that with simple choices.
This class has definitely improved the way I look for evidence and what specific things to use from articles. Even though I still have a lot of work to do with my writing this course was major help towards that goal.
Thank you to Professor Killebrew for the amazing experience
