UFO’s or in other words unidentified flying objects is a subject we are all skeptical or at least aware about. Whether it be from famous movies or camp told stories you have an idea about ufos we have all heard about them. What we don’t know is whether the various abductions and encounters that have taken place in the past are real or not. John Gordon dives into this mysterious subject with the article named UFO in which he goes over several abduction encounters from the 1960s to the 1990s
Author
John Gordon Melton, born on September 1942 in Birmingham Alabama, is an American religious scholar who is the founding director of the institute for the study of American religion. Melton is 77 years old and is currently the Distinguished Professor of American Religious History with the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he lives. Melton is the author of over 45 books including several encyclopedias, handbooks, and scholarly textbooks on American religious history, Methodism, world religions, and new religious movements.
Purpose
In this article Melton goes over several abductions that took place in the 1900s. He speaks on people’s experiences while being abducted such as, being taken up to these alien like creature spaceships and being tested on, either by taking out blood or in an extreme case making them have sexual intercourse with one of these aliens to collect samples. He goes to speak on these subjects for the most part in a neutral state so he doesn’t disagree or push towards a specific direction. He just states peoples experiences throughout the article

For this article the audience can range from researchers, alien enthusiasts, and/or people that are curious about the subject. Due to the fact that it includes slight details on how these various subjects were abducted also tested on which is key details for curious enthusiasts or curious people. He also goes the extra step to source where the facts he has stated are from, so if a researcher reads this article and wants a deeper insight he knows exactly where to head to. This article would fall under a journalistic article as it can’t be a scientific report as an experiment was not conducted or spoken upon.
Setting
This article was written in 2001 which makes it relatively still a close time to these abductions. The time was also an early time for technology which made these abductions much more kind of glorifying and an interesting topic which intrigued humans at the time. To conclude this article by John Gordon does a good job with showing details for various types of peoples whether it be ufo fanatics or ufo researchers.
